What appear to be gun ports, left, are acually a "folly", a Victorian Era fad.  Eyed-spike, below left, were driven into wall mortar, probabley for the reigns to hold animals.  Cables and clips, below were attached to buildings and buttress to secure tarps for shade in hot Savannah summers.
